Things I Want To Leave In 2017 – Blogmas Day 22

At this time of year, it’s natural to reflect on what’s been great and what’s been not so great in the past 12 months. So here’s a snapshot of some of the things I think should be left behind and not brought over into the new year:

Cropped everything: tops, jumpers, trousers… I love them, but also like a bit of variety.

Mental illness stigma: it really is time for that to end.

Fake glasses: you know, the huge, round ones with fake lenses.

Youtube diss tracks: I get it, they’re meant to be funny, but I just don’t think they are?

Online hatred/drama: can’t we just be nice to each other?

Everything being rose gold: there are other colours that deserve a chance.

Fidget spinners: do I need to say any more?

Trump, Brexit and other political disasters: I feel like this also speaks for itself.

Global warming denial: I can’t believe I even thought to mention this, how could this still be a thing in 2017?

That galaxy trend on Youtube: the weird obsession with blue/purple/pink/glittery cakes, drinks, slime and god knows what.

Paleo diet: I don’t really get why we would try and base any of our modern-day decisions on human behaviour from centuries ago?

Discrimination/prejudice: it would be great if society as a whole was more accepting and people had access to more equal opportunities.

Holographic things: I agree, they do look cool, but might be a little overused by now? Do we really need to walk around like human CDs all the time?

Black Old Skool Vans: Again, these are cool, I like them. But everyone seems to be wearing them at this point.

Focus on numbers not content: this seems pretty prevalent on many social media platforms, an obsession with stats that we’re all sucked into. I think there’s a healthy level of this: it’s great to take an interest in how well your content is doing, but I think there’s a problem when you’re spend more energy focussing on numbers rather than what you’re creating.

Copying other creators: this follows on from my last point, really. There seem to be a lot of people mimicking other people’s styles and content purely for likes, and this feels sad; it lessens the authenticity of the content we’re all exposed to. It’s great to be inspired by others, but direct copying isn’t cool.

I don’t want this post to just be swathes of negativity, so I’m going to finish it off with the aspects of 2017 I’d like to see more of in 2018:

Yellow clothing: from flannel shirts to jumpers to socks, I’ve been loving sunny tones this year and hope that continues.

Nutritional yeast: this is possibly the best cooking ingredient for vegans and non-vegans alike – it makes sauces rich and cheesy and tastes amazing with pesto.

Snail mail: I’m not ready to see physical post cease to exist yet!

More vegan options: in restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, events… 2017 has been a great year for the widespread availability of vegan products, at least where I live.

Supporting each other’s content: I’ve loved getting to know other bloggers and it’s amazed me the amount of kindness other bloggers, from other newbies to well-established accounts, have shown towards me.

Film cameras: if only it wasn’t so expensive to buy and develop film I’d be snapping away all the time.

Widespread acknowledgement and education about animal cruelty: from the rise in and easy access to a mass of vegan documentaries to the approval of the ‘milk is inhumane’ advert, animal rights are slowly but surely moving into mainstream media.

Creative activism: it’s great seeing people speaking out for what they believe in, and social media has only made this process all the more creative. We need more of this in 2018.

People getting their voices heard: similar to activism, but also in relation to personal issues – such as the women speaking out about sexual harassment.

More black-comedy dramas: I became obsessed with Bojack Horseman this year because of it’s dark wit, but once I finished it I realised there’s nothing else quite like it out there.

That’s about it for now, is there anything you would like to leave behind this year or particularly want to take forward? Let me know in the comments below!

I’ve been a bit too ensconced in my asocial cave to know what’s been big in 2017, but lately I’ve been rewatching Perfect Strangers from the 80’s, and I can say with conviction that huge shoulder pads should stay there and never be brought back.

Great list! I love both some that you cited as negative (doing things only for likes or numbers and yes, why do we even have to mention climate change – it is real, folks! ) and the positives or things to continue – Love yellow – it makes one feel sunnier! Just bought a bunch of yellow swarovski glass pearl beads to make something cool. And, thank you for being part of that great blogging community that supports one another’s content! Thanks for your thoughts! I am on board with many of them!
