Small Changes to Your Room That Can Boost Your Mental Health

We all have difficult days, hours and minutes, and when these moments strike the setting we find ourselves in can greatly impact how we process and cope with the situations life throws our way. It is totally natural to crave familiarity in times of distress: when toddlers fall over they scream for a hug from a parent and I think our bedroom environment can act as that comforting figure we all sometimes need. It’s a safe haven, and that’s why it should be helping to boost your positivity.

So here are six changes you can make to your bedroom to nurture your wellbeing…

Keep it tidy

This is one I’m sure most of us can agree with, after all a clear space equals a clear mind. Right? This is one I struggle with sometimes. I have a bad habit of allowing my clean laundry to not quite make it back into the wardrobe, creating the phenomenon known as the ‘floordrobe’. Once it gets on top of me, it becomes a big deal to get it clear again. But I’m working on it…

Fresh bedsheets

IMG_6369.JPG

I know, I know. We should all be sleeping with fresh bedsheets at all times anyway, but surely I’m not the only one who wishes they were a little more regular with their bedsheet laundry? I honestly think I sleep better the first night after washing the sheets than any other night. And that washing powder scent… it is HEAVENLY. I will (peacefully) protest against anyone who disagrees.

Fill the walls with memories

If you’re feeling a bit down, one thing that can lift you up again is thinking about good times you’ve had. Maybe it’s those nights out with friends, special events with family or views from mountains you’ve scaled around the world, that lift you up. But whatever it is, making those memories tangible by displaying photos on your walls is the perfect mood booster. As I’m off to university soon, I know that I’m going to want to do this in my new room, and so I ordered some prints from Printiki. I decided to get a good mix of casual shots with friends and family, and travel snaps that remind me of the happiness I felt abroad.

Getting prints off your device and onto glossy or matte photo paper on your wall is effortless with Printiki. The website smoothly guides you through the process of uploading your photos, choosing how to crop and customise them, and finalising your order with such ease and before you know it your prints are sliding through the letterbox. I got the medium square prints and I think they’ll look great once I get them up at university!

Letting light and air in

The importance of daylight and outside air only really becomes apparent to me in the depths of winter, when there’s a lack of both in the house. In summer, I love to take advantage of the long, warm days by getting the blinds all the way up and the windows all the way open. In winter this is a little more tricky.

Lighting up the room

Sometimes nature won’t do the work for you and artificial lighting has to step in. But not any old artificial lights, no no no. My three favourite sources of light for setting a relaxed vibe are fairy lights, candles and LEDs. I absolutely adore Cable and Cotton lights, and have had this colourful set for years now. They really make my room feel cosy.

Candles really come into their own in winter, but I can see myself picking up some floral scented ones for the warmer months. I feel like candles are a classic way to set a vibe in a room. LEDs however, are a totally different story. I’d never thought about using them to decorate a bedroom before last Christmas, when I got given this strip as a present. It is easily stuck to the walls, remote-controlled and can be set to a whole range of colours: my favourite is orange.

Bring life inside

No, not live animals (unless they’re your pets, in which case that’s also a great way to boost your mood) but plants! My houseplants are honestly some of my favourite things in my room. I like how they add a burst of green into the space and also that they need to be taken care of. Focussing on keeping your plants healthy and alive is a great way to simplify the steps you need to take to look after yourself: water, nutrients, daylight, space to breathe…

Most of the room adjustments I’ve discussed in this post that help contribute towards good mental health also apply to raising happy plants funnily enough. Well, except for bedsheets and photo prints I guess. Plants aren’t too bothered about breathing in the aroma of washing powder as they drift off each night, or displaying a photograph from a wild night out in Magaluf. Although I would love to see that.

If, unlike my spider plant, you’re interested in getting some cute prints for your wall, Printiki is kindly offering free shipping with the code A7MXBGAP. Just enter this at checkout to get the money off! Also check out their Instagram for an overload of decoration inspiration ❤

And of course let me know in the comments what you do to customise your living space in order to promote good mental health ❤

I never thought of plants! I definitely agree with the sunlight. My current and last office did not have windows and it definitely impacts my mood. A window is a MUST when I open my business next year. Great post!

I love these ideas (and I love how cost efficient they are too!) – literally every single one I agree with. Your bedsheets are super cute btw, part of me wants to ask where they’re from, but then I’ll probably buy them and I definitely don’t need to be buying bedsheets LOL. I love having photos around my room to display good memories with people xxx

I love ALL of these wonderful tips. I myself am a very big believer in a clear space is a clear mind. I also decorate my walls with memories, it’s probably the first thing I do when moving into a new place. I love love love the LED strips you put up, I might have to copy that in the future! Great post as per usual xx

These are all such good tips and I am so happy that I do them all, except for maybe the clean sheets. I am trying to buy more flowers for my room and keep them alive, but I always forget about them and then they die oops. xx

What a wonderful post – a little spooky too as I’ve juts perched on the side of the bed to read it before the onslaught of fighting a king size duvet into a king size cover.., just off the washing line and smelling divinely fresh 👌🏼
I, too, sleep best when my toes slide between those ‘new’ cotton layers, where everything is still tucked in 🤣
