Brighton Pride 2018 Photo Journal

The celebration of Pride has exploded all over the world in more recent history, and with that comes a whole host of colourful celebrations. I always associate Pride with sunny weather, and seeing as it’s been raining here for the last few days (I think summer has definitely decided to show its face somewhere else at this point) I decided to have a look back through some of my more sun-soaked images from the past few months, plenty of which were taken at Pride. And so, for those of you currently experiencing a winteresque summer day, I thought I could put together a little photo journal to brighten things up a bit.

On 4th August, Pride came to Brighton and I headed down to the parade armed with my camera to try to capture everything that was going on. It became obvious pretty fast where the parade would be coming through as people started lining the streets well in advance.

I got to the spot I thought would be best for photographing the parade and the wait began. The first thing that hit me whilst standing there was how hot it was. Not quite knowing what time the parade would be coming through, I stood holding my place in prime location on the sidelines in direct sun for around an hour before anything actually happened. That’s intense when you have skin as pale as the document I’m currently typing this on.

And then it started – the police came down the road first, on jazzed-up motorbikes and wailing their sirens.

After the police came the rest of the Pride parade. People from all sorts of backgrounds filled the streets in their colourful clothing waving rainbow flags and banners.

One of the most interesting things to see as a spectator at Pride is the range of floats that are driven through with various people dancing and generally having a good time onboard.

There were a lot of rainbows…

…so many rainbows.

This purple smoke was pretty cool, although it made a lot of people cough so it’s probably best seen in photographs rather than in real life.

One thing I love about Pride is the interaction between the people in the parade, the spectators and the police – it all feels good-natured and everyone, regardless of their position of authority, gets involved in taking selfies.
