February Bullet Journal Setup (+ January Flip Through)

Things are changing around here (in the bullet journal department, anyway). They have been for a while, to be honest. Gone are the days of strict habit tracking. I am all about creative expression and to-do lists now. It’s been this way for a while, hence the new art bujo account on Instagram (shameless plug I know, go check it out if that tickles your interest @alys.bujo). Today I thought I’d talk about the journey that explains how I got here, and include a selection of pages from January to show you what I’ve been up to…

Last September, I started a new bullet journal – a Leuchtturm 1917 (yep, the same journal literally everyone loves). I still felt super invested in my original tracking/planning methods but knew I wanted to be a little more arty with this notebook. So I kept all my monthly spreads going as well as making an effort to create an arty spread every now and then to commemorate special occassions.

Moving through the autumn, I fell in love with this creative expression more and more, and the ratio of organisational-to-artsy pages changed significantly. By Christmas, I had poetry, drawings and plenty of watercolour paint sloshed around the dotted pages of my journal; I didn’t see that coming to an end any time soon. So I asked for a ton of stationery for Christmas…aannd once that happens, there is no going back.

January was its own adventure. I accidentally left my bullet journal at home when I went on holiday – this was an emotional rollercoaster in itself (which you can read all about here). But it ‘forced’ me to move outside the pages of that notebook and create for the sheer love of creating. When I was reunited with my journal, I did not want that creative spark to die on me as a sacrifice for ritualistic tracking.

Since then, I have made a conscious effort to keep my mind open to bullet journal approaches: I still religiously use my weekly spreads as a planning tool but make sure to get creative with all the pages in between.

For February, I want to continue this trend. I know I have a busy month coming up, university-wise, so I don’t think I’ll have as much time as I’d like to for arty pages. I’m going to stick to this more creative method for the moment though as it’s relaxing, and having a solid destressing technique is vital for maintaining mental wellbeing.

That means the setup is as simple as it can get really – just a monthly cover page. I will design the weekly spreads as the month goes along, so to keep up with that head on over to @alys.bujo on Instagram 🙂

I needed to see this. I am new to bullet journaling and get so caught up in just tracking. I remember I started it because I wanted to have a place to put all types of creativity, not just to track productivity. Thank you for the inspiration.

I love your bullet journal posts, Alys! You are so talented. Your colour choice for the February pages at the end there are gorgeous! Also, I don’t know if you’ve posted it before and I’ve missed it, but those doodle boxes are a great idea.

I actually have two separate bullet journals – one for creative stuff, like doodles and practicing hand lettering, and one for being organised. 🙂
