My 8 Self-Care Spring Rituals ft. Mia

Spring is a time of growth and fresh starts; if the daffodils have the courage and strength to push their way up into the sunlight after such a long and cold winter then we can at least try too. The sun has been shining the last few days and my mood has definitely taken notice. I have more energy, am finding it easier to get up early and feel like negative things have less impact on me. Oh, and I can actually wear shorts without risking frostbite. So there’s that!

The world is beginning to thaw out a little and people are starting to crack out the barbecues. This weather actually makes me want to get out more and be a little more sociable (I know right, shock horror for an introvert like me) and so this feels like the perfect time to take part in a wonderful collab with a wonderful human being, Mia from Beautiful, Creative, Inspiring Life.

Why I’m Challenging My Comfort Zone – Seeking Discomfort #01

We all have a comfort zone: some are small and particular whilst others are bigger and encompass a lot of experiences. Some have thick walls constantly under guard whilst others have more lenient borders. As I’ve grown up, my comfort zone has stretched out in many ways – for example, my independence, ability to travel alone and slower heart rate when making phone calls.

Yet, in a lot of other ways, my comfort zone has shrunk as I’ve become more self-aware, and as a result of this, more self-conscious. My comfort zone in terms of putting myself out there, doing sport and self-confidence have all diminished; sometimes it feels like the walls have been built up higher and surrounded by a moat. This is something I’d like to change.

Moments in Sydney: 101 Words of Gratitude

From July to November 2016 I lived in Sydney, Australia, in a room I shared with two girls I met in a hostel. I had moved out there alone and it was my first time solo travelling; as you can imagine, this was a period of intense ups and downs. The further I get away from those days, the more they become tinged in nostalgia and the more I want to hold onto those months I spent abroad.

I thought I’d write a short gratitude piece about some of my experiences there in a similar style to the 101 words I shared a few weeks ago about appreciating the January sunshine. In that post I mentioned how acknowledging small moments that make me happy in day to day life is one of my goals for 2018, so today’s post will be a paragraph of appreciation for my Sydney travel memories.

The Medicine of Sunshine: 101 Words of Gratitude

One of my goals for the new year, all of which I wrote about at the start of January, was to appreciate more. To notice the gratitude I felt, particularly towards the smaller moments in life. I have been writing a few points every couple of days in my new bullet journal, but I felt like it could be beneficial to sometimes expand on these points, and stay with the thought for a while, to truly appreciate those moments instead of just jotting them down and forgetting about them.

Expressing gratitude has been connected to increased wellbeing, and through my own experiences I feel like training my brain to pick up on the good things, no matter how small, makes me more susceptible to noticing positives in everyday life. It’s a pretty simple addition to my daily routine but it has potential to keep my head above the water in which low moods live.
